Fixing Jailbroken iPod Touch, iPhone Problems

Wow. Wowwww. That was kinda scary.

So, my iPod Touch was running jailbroken firmware (version 2.1) was in need of an update to firmware 2.2. Apparently, you need to be running unjailbroken firmware version 2.2 to jailbreak it. So, I just thought it would be as simple as going into iTunes and restoring my iPod’s software to the new version.

I was stupid enough to forget that iTunes rejects blatantly jailbroken devices, such as mine. Duhr. Naturally, it told me my iPod could not be restored, and it spat some error message at me before disconnecting my iPod to my computer. On top of this, it told me there was a problem with the software used to connect my iPod to my computer (it had told me this before, but I hadn’t noticed any problems with it). I know there are a lot of people with my problem, so I thought I’d share what I did.

Here is my fix:

  • Step 1: Close everything and restart your computer. Believe it or else, this often fixes problems. See if  your iPod connects now. No? Go to step 2.
  • Step 2: If you’re running Windows Vista, hit Start, and type in “Services” in the start bar, and run the program that pops up. If you’re in Windows XP, hit start, click on run (or, if you’re a pro, hold down the windows key and hit r), and type in “services.msc” to bring up the Windows Services manager. Not sure if there’s something like this for Mac’s… sorry. From here, you’ll want to find “Apple Movile Device” and “iPod Service.” Once you’ve found these, right click them and select “Restart.” A little dialogue will appear telling you Windows is trying to stop and start the service. Nothing too crazy. Once you’re done, close the window, open iTunes, and plug in your iPod. See if it showes up. Still no good? Keep reading.
  • Step 3: The last thing I did was I made sure my version of iTunes was up to date. You can do this by opening iTunes, clicking the “Help” menu, and selecting the “Check for Updates” option. If there’s an update, download and install it (it will ask you to restart your computer at the end, so be ready for that). After the restart, re-open iTunes, and try plugging your iPod in again. Still frustrated? Read step 4.
  • Step 4: This is the last thing I had to do before I could connect my iPod: I just reinstalled iTunes. Hit Start, click Control Pannel, and (in Vistas) select Programs and Features. In Windows XP, select Add and Remove Programs.Scroll down a bit untill you see iTunes. When you select it, you will be asked if you want to uninstall it, change its installed files, or repair the installation. If you want, you can repair it first and see if that helps. I just uninstalled it altogether. You then have to redownload iTunes and install it again. After this, plug in your iPod. Your iPod should be recognised as an “iPod that needs to be restored.”

From this point on, I’ll assume your iPod can be connected to iTunes. Do not, for whatever reason, just click the restore button. Trust me, you’ll have to redo everything you just did, because you will wind up with the same error message. Instead, you need to put your iPod into DFU mode. I can’t honestly tell you that I have any idea what that stands for. So, you’ll need a stopwatch, unless you have a fairly good sense of time.

  • Plug in your iPod if you haven’t already. Make sure it shows up in iTunes.
  • Hold down both the menu and the lock buttons for 10 seconds (this is where the stopwatch comes in). The screen will shut off, and the device will disappear from iTunes
  • Let go of the lock button, but keep holding down the home button for another 20-30 seconds (or until the iPod appears in iTunes again). Your iPod’s screen should still be off. If it is on, you’ve done it wrong, and need to start at the first step again (i.e. hold down both the menu and lock buttons…)

Once your iPod is in DFU mode, you can restore/update as you please. Heck, you could probably install 1.1.1 if you really wanted to, although that would be stupid. Another secret: in Windows, if you hold down the shift key while you hit the restore button, you can pick a file to restore from. So, if you downloaded a different firmware than the latest one, or if you have a custom firmware file, you can select that file and install from that. Works like a charm.

I sincerely hope no one else has the same [swears loudly] problem I had.

Too bad i cant fix that problem for people that NEED a jailbreak because i have the unibody macbook and there is some driver that is blockingnthe DFU signal. :( just thought that would be a good recommendation…

    • Salem

Are you so sure? I’m fairly sure you can override that signal (which was ALSO implemented in the Windows driver) by holding the buttons down the respective amounts of time.. and MAKING sure not to let go. If the screen flashes, keep holding the buttons in.

easy jailbreak and easy way to unjailbreak it:

      BlackRa1n

its for mac and windows and works well..

butt its teathered thats why it will be easy to unjailbreak it.

works for me and my new itouch it works for
      1.0,2.0,3.0
      8,16, and 32 gigabyte

      • http://technoheads.org Salem

I always tell people to go with BlackRa1n, but a lot of people have been
complaining that they encounter errors and stuff… I should make a tutorial
        or something.

        • Mike!

Ok, I know how to fix the problem if you can’t open BlackRa1n on windows 7. here’s the link….

        • panda

can u make the tutorial on youtube. ps. whats it called?

          • http://technoheads.org Salem

            I can’t make a youtube video because my iPod isn’t broken. -_-
            Also, what is what called?

  • Asek

    Hey dude, here’s my problem:
I Jailbreak my Ipod Touch 2nd Gen, (in the threated version), and than, lol, i was kind of stupid, i tried do restore it. But because it is Jailbroken, he like cant do it. I will try out now what u said, but if u have any other ideas how to fix it, i would be glad!
    thanks!

  • Salem

    Asek,
This post was made for people with PRECISELY your problem You’ve come to the right place. Try my steps, and let me know if it works.

  • http://blog.christophertran.net/ Christopher

Umm…. Salem you don’t have a second gen so how can you troubleshoot that? and Asek you shouldn’t have done that because there are currently NO consumer jailbreaks released at this time so you are kind of out of luck. Next time, research before doing something stupid. (no offense intended)

    • Salem

      Chris,
You’re fairly wrong on both accounts.
There IS a jailbreak for 2gen iPod Touch.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dg5FOYgs8Kk
Secondly, I’m fairly confident that the same steps will work with both devices, seeing as the connection between iPod Touch and computer is minimally different (with only some syncing changes).

      • http://blog.christophertran.net/ Christopher

        Salem,
        1. He doesn;t clearly show the volume controls, and the ipod isn’t rounded.
        2. When he selects the firmware, note it says “iPod1,1” and not “iPod2,1” as the 2nd gen iPod Touchs use separate firmware.

Trying still to prove me wrong?

      • http://blog.christophertran.net/ Christopher

http://redsn0w.com/ here is the new jailbreak. They now offer a tethered Jailbreak. But warned, USE AT OWN RISK. If you turn off the iPod, or the battery dies, you will have to “Redsn0w” it again to disable signature check. Sleeping does not apply.

        Christopher

  • Asek

    Thanks Salem,
i dont really know how, but i “unjailbreaked” my ipod! haha, i put it in DFU mode, and just clicked restore in iTunes, and it restored like an normal iPod! Haha, i thought it wouldnt work, but ther eu go =]
thanks you verry mutch Salem, u saved my iPod :D

    • AsWe

Hi, please help me im srewed up…..
I followed up all the steps as on the link, After i got the white background screen and was restoring the jailbroken ipsw file, i got an error saying cant restore and it gives the error id as (14). then i tried to restore it back to the original ipsw 2.2.1 and tried for several times, but no success. please be kindfull and give me a little help. ur kind help is really appreciated…. thanx in advanced…

      • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

Haha I’m always happy to help. First of all, have you put your iPod Touch into DFU mode? If you had a white screen, it was not in dfu mode. Try following the steps again; its frustrating at first. Trust me. But like whistling, once you get it, you’ll always do it right the next time. Lemme know if this works.

  • Asek

    Chriis,
trust me, i had Jailbroken my iPod Tocuh 2 G!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Uy00QsBO2c&feature=channel_page this is the video that i had used, its still a threated version, but it still works, if u watch the video till the end, u will see he showing his jailbroken ipod touch 2g, with the volume control and stuff…
    anyways, thank you again Salem
    and peace

Well, if your computer is recognizing it as plugged in, but iTunes isn’t, try doing this:
Restart the services the same way I showed in the example,
    Restart your computer, and lastly
    Reinstall iTunes.
Do it in that order: it seems to be an iTunes problem, and is the same one I had. If worse comes to worst, find another computer, install iTunes, and restore in DFU mode from there.

Salem, Thank you so much. I thought I screwed myself with trying to jailbreak my Ipod Touch my cpu froze so I went ahead and restarted thinking it wouldn’t be a problem to my luck the jailbreak program I was using no longer recognized my Ipod and I got nothing but a bunch of scrolls and numbers. I went ahead and followed your method 4 of holding down the home and lock buttons for the times allotted and actually to my luck it restored it. I wouldv’e probably went out and bought a new Ipod but thanks to you I can use that money for something else. Again I want to thank you alot the Ipod I have is sentimental so even if I did replace it it wouldn’t be the same. I love u man.

      • http://technoheads.org Salem

So you know, if you’re trying to restore your iPod/iPhone and you see the
apple logo, it’s not in DFU mode and you won’t be able to restore it.

It could have frozen up. You can skip this step if you need; try one of the ones further down.
Or, you could tell me specifically whats wrong with your iPod so I could try to help you further. What firmware is it running, was it jailbroken, etc.

    Hey Salem,

Looks like you’ve been a great help to others so far, was hoping you could assist one more. I jailbroke my first gen ipod a while back right before the 2.0 software with the apps came out. I hadn’t upgraded it or restored it until now. I simply went to itunes and hit restore first and then tried to update it. I paid for and downloaded the new app software too. Now I can’t update it and its stuck in DFU mode. When I try clicking restore it extracts the software and prepares for restore, the bar creeps along 1/5th of the way across at best, and then Unknown Error msg (14) pops up. I tried your 10 seconds hold and home trick and no dice. Do you have any other ideas? I’m using a Powerbook G4 btw.

    Thanks in advance.

    Best.

    • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

I’m always happy to help. It sounds like you have the same issue I had; Apple got smart and put something like a DFU checker in iTunes. When you say DFU mode, you imply that your iPod’s screen is in fact black, and your computer recognizes it, correct? Try to restart it, so that you get the typical “Connect to iTunes” image, and then restart your Powerbook. After its restarted, plug your iPod in, make sure iTunes recognizes it, and then put it into DFU mode. Like I said, make sure you follow the DFU instructions to the tee, or iTunes will force it into normal recovery mode. It happened a dozen or so times when I tried upgrading to 2.0 jailbroken. Now then, try restoring again. If you fail, you need to manually try to install the firmware. Locate a copy of the 2.0 firmware (Google it… theres a billion download links out there), connect your iPod in DFU mode again, and go to the iPod screen in iTunes. Hold down shift and click restore (its shift on PC’s… it might be control on apples), and you will see a browser box, asking you to locate the firmware you’d like to use. Navigate to the firmware you just downloaded, select it, and restore from that. Depending on whether it accepts your licensing or not, you may need to downgrade to iTunes 7.7 temporarily, as it was the last version of iTunes that allowed people to restore to the 2.0 firmware, whether or not they owned it. Again, look on Google for the firmware. Its there somewhere.

If you have any replies, can you post them on chat.technoheads.org, so I can keep track of them a bit better? Thanks :D

i jailbroke my ipod the other day with quickfreedom and i have 2nd gen 2.2.1 well it was all perfect til i tried putting music on it. It says i have an error unable to read… what do i do? how do i put music on my ipod?

    • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

First off, know that quickfreedom is in beta, so you may have issues like this. I found a nice walkthrough for quickfreedom here: http://www.megaleecher.net/Jailbreak_iPod_Touch_2G
I’d recommend restoring (and if you have issues with that, look at my iPod Touch Issues tutorial. I can send you a link) and retrying. Or, try plugging your jailbroken iPod into another computer; it may be an issue with your usb port. Try it out, and let me know how that goes for you.

  • http://hacksdaily.net Hacker

Or just put it in DFU mode
it will restore your iphone or ipod to the factory firmware easy. then rejailbreak it.

  • XXDemonxxMephilesXX

So far I personally thing QuickFreedom is the way to go. It’s fast, it’s easy, and it has extra features. I have a different problem. I was being super stupid here. I have an app called Categories. I put all my files into Categories and transferred them into SBSettings. My IPod froze and i restarted it. It never gets past the start-up screen. It stays on there for a good three minutes then the loading wheel comes up for about three minutes then restarts my IPod. it keeps repeating the process over and over again. I’m only a stupid fifteen year old guy. i don’t know anything. Anybody got any suggestions?

    • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

      Extra features like what?

Here’s what I recommend; Plug in your iPod, put it into DFU mode, download the 3.0 firmware (if you need a link, let me know), and force-restore to it (go into iTunes, click on your iPod in iTunes, hold down shift, click restore, and select your 3.0 firmware). Then, if you want to jailbreak, I recommend getting Redsn0w (http://redsn0w.com/)… I use it to jailbreak my iPod (it works on both generations). I’m not sure if they’ve fixed this yet, but when you’re jailbreaking with Redsn0w, do NOT tell it to install ICY yet. Have it install Cydia, and if you want Icy, install it via Cydia.

  • http://bootme.hopto.org/ Mike

I wish my solution was this easy. Not even DFU will solve my problem. I will try another computer tomorrow to reinstall my ipod… On this one i keep getting error when i restore my ipod (14)… :(

    • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

Are you using a clean copy of the firmware, or are you using a jailbroken copy? If you’re using a jailbroken copy, it’s probably corrupt. I can send you a link to some fresh firmware. What generation iPod are you using?

  • Diana

    Hello,

Yet another person with a problem here. I downloaded the 3.0 software and tried to update it pressing shift and then clicking Update. My iPod touch is a 1st Gen with 1.1.5. My problem is I got error 14, STUPIDLY restored it, lost all my music but I had backed up my videos so it’s not the end of the world… anyway, I put my iPod on DFT mode twice already and I can restore it but I can’t update it as the button is gray/not highlighted. I can only restore it.

When I do so, iTunes shows me a SET UP YOUR IPOD page and wants me to restore a backup or to identify it as a new iPod. I choose new and there we go again, I try to update it and the error appears again. Help? Thanks in advance.

    • Diana

Worked after restoring with NEW, 3.0 firmware! DOH! You probably know this would work, just letting you know so you don’t lose time replying to my original post.

      • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

Haha I’m glad you got it working so quickly :D Another thing I noticed that MIGHT have helped you out is that DFU mode is NOT an update mode; its a restore mode. Although DFU stands for “Device Firmware Upgrade”, it will NOT let you just click update. You must hit restore, and then go from there. If you have any other issues, please feel free to contact me! Its always my pleasure.

  • sujaykrish94

hey dude i have a 2nd gen ipod touch 8gb(it is not jailbroken) i tried updating to 3.0 for free from 2.2.1. at the end an error(14) popped up. now i have restored back to 2.2.1. how to upgrade again to 3.0 without error (14).

I’m fairly certain you’ll need to use DFU mode, Sujaykrish84. I’m pretty sure I have a blurb about how to do that in this article.

    hey man ,
I have a jailbroken itouch, the home button stopped working man and im freaking out.
Its off and i cant put it into dfu mode at all its like itunes doesnt recognise it… man id really appreciate some help..wat can i do? I want to restore it to original so i can take it to apple coz i didnt buy it too long ago.
    Cheers for ur help
    P.

    • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

Hmm… thats a bit scary, mate. Have you tried restoring your iPod Touch normally? Just plug it in to your computer, open iTunes, click on your iPod, and click “restore”. If you want, you can select a specific firmware by holding down shift (on a pc) or option (on a mac), and then browsing to the file (ending in .ipsw) you want to restore to. Of course, do NOT restore to a jailbroken firmware, as it will attempt to re-jailbreak your iPod. If you need a clean firmware, I’d recommend going to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and selecting 3.0 (and if that doesn’t work, try 2.0).

The issue I see here, clearly, is that, as far as I know, you NEED to be able to use your home button AND your lock button in order to put your iPod Touch in DFU mode. I’ll look up alternative methods, but get back to me when ever you get a chance.

      • Peter

cheers so much for your reply.
ye the thing is itunes doesnt recognise that the itouch is plugged in thats the annying thing.
i might go into an apple store and try to get the home button fixed dunno how much it ll cost.
It comes us as device so it does recognise it but i cant access it or restore it in anywy.
What do you think i should do?
        B.

        • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

          No problem :D
Have you tried plugging it into a different computer? If you have, make sure you follow step 2 in my tutorial (the step about restarting the iPod service on your computer).

Oh… are you a mac or a pc?

  • Will

Ah I love you man :P

So my warranty runs out in about a week and, lucky me, my headphone socket broke. Figured I’d best restore before I sent off – Apple don’t take too kindly to jailbreakers after all

Anyway I had the same problem as you, and if I hadn’t stumbled across this guide I’d be stuck with a semi-working, fairly scratched up iPod Touch. As it is, I’m about to send it packing with UPS and get a brand new shiny replacement :D

    • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

I’m so glad I could help! A little secret I noticed with my iPod; if there is dust or lint in the earphone jack, it will make it seem like your earphone jack is busted. It happened to me a few times. But hey, you get a new iPod out of it, so send it in!

  • Jay

    Hi,
I have the iTouch 2nd Gen i was wondering could i do this to update to 3.1.1 from 3.0?

    • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

Well, it depends on whether or not you want it to still be jailbroken after all that.
If you don’t, you can just plug it in to iTunes, click the “Upgrade” button, and cross your fingers.
Otherwise, you can either try the VERY VERY beta greenp0ison jailbreak here: http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/2009/09/13/greenpois0n-will-jailbreak-3-1-and-3g-ipod-touch/
OR just wait a little bit. QuickPwn was just released for Mac and can jailbreak most iPhones, but the iPod Touch 2nd Gen isn’t supported yet.

      • Jay

Can i use Redsnow again and use the newest fireware?

        • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

No, sorry. Every firmware is ‘jailbroken’ differently. While an exploit might be present in 3.0, it (in all probability) won’t be there in 3.1 and 3.1.1 Thats why you can’t just use Redsn0w to jailbreak 3.1 or 3.1.1.
You should also know that, as far as I know, as long as you have an iPod Touch and not an iPhone, there is no difference between 3.1 and 3.1.1.

  • http://francophonerss.com Akley

    Can i uxe Redsnow again and use the newest fireware?;

    • http://www.technoheads.org Salem

As much as I wish i could say yes… no. Each firmware is jailbroken differently, and redsn0w currently doesn’t support the 3.1 or 3.1.1 jailbreaking methods. Yet. Just be patient for now.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. The first time I jailbroke it, I stupidly forgot to configure password off. When the app asked me to connect to iTunes, iTunes couldn’t read the iPod because it was locked. The screen was stuck at the ‘connect to iTunes’ and wouldn’t do anything else. After trying everything, I had to take it back to the Apple store to get them to fix it and reconfig the software.

The second time, I used ZiPhone. Something messed up, and it wasn’t me, the file couldn’t be found or some shit, plus it wouldn’t stack. This guide helped me through it, even though I tried DFU and everything else. Luck or whatever, this worked. I am so thankful right now. And I won’t be jailbreaking my iPod anytime soon. (At least, until next week…. just kidding.) I figured, screw it, I only need it for music anyway.

    TL;DR, just wanna say thanks!

Im so glad I helped you! Would you like me to walk you through jailbreaking 3.0 on your iPod? I’d be happy to do that, if you’re interested.

hey i jail broke my IPod i repaired it a day later to start new because i didn’t want what i downloaded, while it was in the process of repairing “after it finished” it went to the black screen with the apple sign I haven’t been able to get past that point. I tried Plugging it in and it just keeps beeping, what do i do to fix this problem?

P.S. while it is plugged into the comp. it just keeps making this beeping noise as if it was connected.

I've had the EXACT same issue. What you need to do is to put your iPod in
DFU mode. Plug your iPod into your computer, and make sure it shows up in
iTunes (or that you hear that beeping noise to show it was connected). Shut
it off by holding down the menu AND the lock button for 10 seconds. Some
time during this 10 seconds, your iPod WILL disconnect and you WILL hear
that 'disconnect' beeping noise from your computer. This is ok; its supposed
to happen. After the 10 seconds is up, let go of the LOCK button (the button
on the top of the iPod), but keep holding on the home button (the button on
the bottom of the front of the iPod) for another 20 to 30 seconds. Your
computer might say that it's installing a new device called “iPod DFU Mode”
or something along those lines. This is ok, and do NOT cancel it (should it
appear). Eventually, it will pop back up in iTunes.
At this point, I'd recommend getting a clean copy of the iPod Touch firmware
(Go for 3.0). Try this site here; http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
Make sure you select the 3.0 (NOT 3.1 or 3.0.1) firmware for the correct
generation of your device. If you need help picking the right one, let me
know. After you've downloaded it, go into iTunes, and click your iPod on the
left-hand side menu. If you're on a mac, hold down OPTION, click “restore”,
and select the firmware you've just downloaded. It ends in “.ipsw” and looks
like a box. If you're on a PC (windows), hold down SHIFT, click restore, and
again, select the firmware. Just let it go now, and it SHOULD restore your
iPod Touch back to normal. I can't guarantee anything, nor can I guarantee
that my advice will fix anything, but i hope it works for you!

Listen guys maybe you can help me out I have an 8GB iPod Touch 2G running 3.1.2 firmware, but the problem is that whenever I try to make it ra1n or use blackra1n RC1, RC2, & even RC3 it jailbreaks it for me but somehow makes it tethered like the 3G model. Each time I want to restart it, it goes to the connect to iTunes logo and it’s annoying because it shouldn’t do that it’s not a 3G!! So I’ve tried a million methods on downgrading getting those wonderful 1604 errors, then those 20 errors just beautiful and many said do quickfreedom it’ll put me on a white screen well none of that worked because I don’t get a whitescreen, believe me I tried almost all methods. Just please can someone help me out here I just ran out of ideas….

        • http://technoheads.org Salem

          Ok ok ok… hang on.
First off, have you tried doing a CLEAN install with a FRESH copy of the
3.1.2 firmware? and do you have the 3.1.2 firmware for the 2G iPod Touch?
Secondly, a few of my friends have had issues with Ra1n crashing in
mid-jailbreak, giving them an incomplete jailbreak. have you had any issues
          like this?

          • Anonymous

Yes I have restored it to original 3.1.2 FW from iTunes itself for the 2G iPod Touch. As I mentioned before I tried all RC’s of BlackRa1n 1,2,3. Here’s what happened for RC1 it would show his picture but then turn black people said hold power and home button for 20 secs and it’ll be better no luck I had to restore it. Next RC2 & even RC3 would show Goe’s pic and jailbreak it like in a few seconds, what happens is that usually people are suppose to get Geo’s pic and then it would restart showing the Apple logo but for me it wouldn’t go to the apple logo after showing Geo’s pic it goes into slide for unlock mode. Now you would say yea great it’s jailbroken true but what happens now is lets say you want to reboot the iPod it shuts off normally and turns on with connect to iTunes and once again I would have to click on make it ra1n in order to jailbreak it. I really don’t understand why that’s happening.

          • http://technoheads.org Salem

What operating system are you using? and are you restoring BEFORE you use
the RC2/RC3 firmware? I wouldn’t even touch RC1 or 2 anymore, as they had
bugs that could mess you up.

          • Anonymous

In my house I have XP and Win 7, tried on both, and yea I restore all the time b/c it always puts my iPod in connect to iTunes mode.

          • http://technoheads.org Salem

are your restores successful? like, have you tried using them, syncing them,
            etc?

          • Anonymous

Sorry been kind of busy lately, but yes they restore normally/successfully. I guess the best method is to wait until another firmware is out and a jailbreak for that firmware. :(

          • http://technoheads.org Salem

Hmm… i really want this to work for you. Can I arrange a skype chat with
you so I can view your screen while you do this? No need for a mic or
            camera.

          • Anonymous

you mean view my computer screen or view my ipod?

          • http://technoheads.org Salem

View your computer screen; I’m assuming there’s an error with the
jailbreaking process on your computer, since not much is done on the ipod
itself. This is totally voluntary, and it’ll actually be the first time I
remote view a total stranger, but if it’ll help you, I’m happy to assist.

          • Anonymous

Yea I’m fine with it but it won’t help it’ll just say make it ra1n then I click on it it’ll open up iTunes in DFU mode then Geo’s head will appear on my iPod then it’ll quickly go to unlock screen and then on my computer you’ll just see done waiting for reboot from balckra1n app and then iTunes will turn normal I’ve tried it a million times but if you think you can help sure go ahead you use TeamViewer?

          • http://technoheads.org Salem

Is iTunes running when you start it? if it is, close it. if its NOT, try
running it beforehand. that might help.

          • Anonymous

Tried all methods while iTunes runs, while it’s not, I’ve tried to end all process too still the same

          • http://technoheads.org Salem

Don’t end all processes… one of them is the iPod driver, and you’ll need
            that to run, trust me.

          • Anonymous

My friend gave me his iPod just like mine 2G 8GB also the same thing exactly the same thing. So that means blackra1n is corrupted somehow I believe.

  • Collin

i sold my friend my ipod touch(1st gen) and his mom made him give it back to me, while he had it he (i assume jailbroke it?-you can cusomtize the background, apps, the little bubbles for the app pages, and so on) he used it with blackra1n, is there any help for me?

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Well, it seems he successfully jailbroke it… what is your problem?

    • Collin

i think i got it fixed. thanks man youre very helpful :)

  • nick

it worked i fuuckin love you dude

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

      Glad it worked!

  • Brandon W

i recently used the Blackra1n program and i deleted a program on Cydia called terminal and my ipod is frozen on the apple screen from when you 1st turn it on. so i let the battery die out then when i turned it back on it stays frozen on the apple screen. It also doesnt connect to the computer no more. it’s screwed! Any suggestions???

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

It sounds like you messed up the firmware; did you try walking through the
steps above? You need to put it into dfu mode.

  • Anthony

i need help. i just installed the blakrain but i havent used it yet. i havent installed cydia or anything yet
.Now i can go to the home page. Do i just need to restore it?

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

      I believe if you’ve just installed BlackRa1n, there should be a blackra1n
app on your home screen that, once run, installs Cydia or Icy, or maybe even
both, depending on which you chose. Run that, and see how that works for
      you.

  • Kevin

After trying my own way numerous times, I went through these directions step by step and much to my surprise, it worked! I am not very good at fixing these type of issues and am extremely thankful and appreciative of you taking the time to put this together! Very helpful and thank you very, very much!

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

      Kevin,
I’m really glad my instructions are still able to help people like you.
Please, if at any time you need help, stop back here, and I’ll try my best

Thanks for putting soo much effort into this.. we people really need you, Salim ! :DA

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

What ddn’t work? the BlackRa1n or the iPod itself? Blackra1n is a tethered
jailbreak, meaning you have to plug it in every time you restart it.

  • diana

hi. i need help. i have a ipod touch 3g with 3.1.1 software and i jailbrake it with BlackRa1n and i install cydia then by mistake delete cydia is there some way to reinstal it. i try yours steps but didn’t work when i press restore it says i need to restore and upgrate, the it starts downloading the upgrade and then every 10 or 15 min the ipod returns to the black scren with the apple and disapears from the itunes and then it just comes back and a message apears telling me it is restoring in the end when the upgrade it’s downloded another message apears that says it can’t be restore because the connection broke.what should i do now…

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Check further down the tutorial: you need to put your device in DFU mode. I
have a step-by-step set of instructions about halfway down the page that
should help you. DFU stands for Device Firmware Upgrade, or something along
those lines, and iTunes should restore your device from that mode (if it is
restoring normally, it probably won’t if it is jailbroken).

Okay so my problem is this. I used blackra1n to jailbreak my iTouch. (its a 3rd generation 8GB) However, it froze one day so i restarted it. and it went into restore mode. No big deal. This had happened before. However, when i ran blackrain to fix it, my itouch got unplugged from the computer and now everytime i turn it on it just stops at the black screen with apple logo. I can restart it, and i have it in DFU mode. My iTunes recognizes it only as an iPod though. However, I tried restoring it but i just get error 1601. saying (This iPod could not be restored). PLEASE HELP?

  • steveo

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

First off, restart your iPod again, and see if it boots. Secondly, have you
tried any of the steps listed above?

  • billy
