Fixing Jailbroken iPod Touch, iPhone Problems

Wow. Wowwww. That was kinda scary.

So, my iPod Touch was running jailbroken firmware (version 2.1) was in need of an update to firmware 2.2. Apparently, you need to be running unjailbroken firmware version 2.2 to jailbreak it. So, I just thought it would be as simple as going into iTunes and restoring my iPod’s software to the new version.

I was stupid enough to forget that iTunes rejects blatantly jailbroken devices, such as mine. Duhr. Naturally, it told me my iPod could not be restored, and it spat some error message at me before disconnecting my iPod to my computer. On top of this, it told me there was a problem with the software used to connect my iPod to my computer (it had told me this before, but I hadn’t noticed any problems with it). I know there are a lot of people with my problem, so I thought I’d share what I did.

Here is my fix:

  • Step 1: Close everything and restart your computer. Believe it or else, this often fixes problems. See if  your iPod connects now. No? Go to step 2.
  • Step 2: If you’re running Windows Vista, hit Start, and type in “Services” in the start bar, and run the program that pops up. If you’re in Windows XP, hit start, click on run (or, if you’re a pro, hold down the windows key and hit r), and type in “services.msc” to bring up the Windows Services manager. Not sure if there’s something like this for Mac’s… sorry. From here, you’ll want to find “Apple Movile Device” and “iPod Service.” Once you’ve found these, right click them and select “Restart.” A little dialogue will appear telling you Windows is trying to stop and start the service. Nothing too crazy. Once you’re done, close the window, open iTunes, and plug in your iPod. See if it showes up. Still no good? Keep reading.
  • Step 3: The last thing I did was I made sure my version of iTunes was up to date. You can do this by opening iTunes, clicking the “Help” menu, and selecting the “Check for Updates” option. If there’s an update, download and install it (it will ask you to restart your computer at the end, so be ready for that). After the restart, re-open iTunes, and try plugging your iPod in again. Still frustrated? Read step 4.
  • Step 4: This is the last thing I had to do before I could connect my iPod: I just reinstalled iTunes. Hit Start, click Control Pannel, and (in Vistas) select Programs and Features. In Windows XP, select Add and Remove Programs.Scroll down a bit untill you see iTunes. When you select it, you will be asked if you want to uninstall it, change its installed files, or repair the installation. If you want, you can repair it first and see if that helps. I just uninstalled it altogether. You then have to redownload iTunes and install it again. After this, plug in your iPod. Your iPod should be recognised as an “iPod that needs to be restored.”

From this point on, I’ll assume your iPod can be connected to iTunes. Do not, for whatever reason, just click the restore button. Trust me, you’ll have to redo everything you just did, because you will wind up with the same error message. Instead, you need to put your iPod into DFU mode. I can’t honestly tell you that I have any idea what that stands for. So, you’ll need a stopwatch, unless you have a fairly good sense of time.

  • Plug in your iPod if you haven’t already. Make sure it shows up in iTunes.
  • Hold down both the menu and the lock buttons for 10 seconds (this is where the stopwatch comes in). The screen will shut off, and the device will disappear from iTunes
  • Let go of the lock button, but keep holding down the home button for another 20-30 seconds (or until the iPod appears in iTunes again). Your iPod’s screen should still be off. If it is on, you’ve done it wrong, and need to start at the first step again (i.e. hold down both the menu and lock buttons…)

Once your iPod is in DFU mode, you can restore/update as you please. Heck, you could probably install 1.1.1 if you really wanted to, although that would be stupid. Another secret: in Windows, if you hold down the shift key while you hit the restore button, you can pick a file to restore from. So, if you downloaded a different firmware than the latest one, or if you have a custom firmware file, you can select that file and install from that. Works like a charm.

I sincerely hope no one else has the same [swears loudly] problem I had.

  • Gill44

ok man. i cant explain what happened with my ipod. i turned it on and all the apps werent moving smoothly when i swiped the screen. they were lagging and just making a big mess. i tried restoring it but iTunes said that i wasnt eligable for restoration. i tried rebooting and restarting. all the apps work fine.

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Well, that sounds like you're running something processor-intensive in the

background. First of all, what gen iPod do you have? Second of all, I take

it's jailbroken, but what firmware is it running? If you want a quick fix,

try going through Cydia and uninstalling everything you don't need.

Honestly, it sounds like your iPod is just a little too slow for what you're

      asking it to do.

  • Abb_13

hi salem,,5 dayes ago i jailbroke my ipod with jailbreak me,everything waz perfect when my brother changed the password,he told me he forgot about what the password waz n then i got stuck with the lock screen, that waz fine bit u got fed up of trying to guss the password he had put nu i decided to restore it wid itunes,,i didnt know about shsh or enything so i went ahead wid it,now it comes wid the logo of itunes and a apple charger cable like a new ipod,iv tryed everything to unlock it or restore it ,5 dayes now,and i would appreciate eny advice,,

  • Abb_13

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

So you know, if you see the iTunes logo, or anything on the screen really,

      it isn't in dfu mode.

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

I'm so glad it worked for you! What gen ipod do you have, by the way? (out

      of curiosity)

  • Luiscortez

If I update or restore my iPod do I lose my music & apps????

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

it'll wipe your iPod as is. You can back up and restore from iTunes, though.

  • Willsabug

  • Willsabug

Oh and thank you for helping Salem I thought I would have really broke my sisters itouch

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Haha no problem. In most situations, as long as nothing is physically

broken, there's a way to bring it back. I'm glad i could help you get yours

      working.

  • Ronnybd

Youre awesome, but what if it won't verify my ipod with apple. i mean i did everything right, but is itunes supposed to tell u ur ipod is DFU cause it says mine is in recovery, but i did what you said and it's off and everything PLZ HELP ME! i'm running 4.2.1

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

if iTunes says it's in recovery but your iPod's screen is off, then you've

      done it right.

  • JOHANNA

I changed my theme of my jailbroken ipod to the drizzy drake theme and no everythings black and when i unlock it all the apps go up and the dissapear. Please help me !!

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

If you can't open anything, then I'd recommend wiping and restoring. If you

can manage to open something, I'd do it. see if you can manually uninstall

the theme/your theme software via SSH.

  • Chezzer65

I'm sorry, mate, but you don't sound like you're old enough to think about

jailbreaking. Jailbreaking takes a bit of understanding. You need to tell me

Most likely not. Why do you want me to do that?

  • jordan

Ii have windows 7 so it came with the new itunes. I also cant find out what to do with mine because it let me restore my ipod but it is stuck at the restoring screen on my ipod. If i disconnect my ipod it runs until its dead. It is still stuck at that screen even if i charge it. how can i fix this?

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

      1. You really shouldn't disconnect while it's restoring. That could be bad.

      2. You can still uninstall/reinstall iTunes like a normal program (because

      it IS a normal program).

      3. Follow my steps really, really carefully, one at a time. If it lets you

restore, it should work. Otherwise it could be an issue with your iPod's

      hardware.

I reinstalled Itunes and the itouch still isn't recognized. is there anything else i can do? the software is 4.2.1

  • Keller

    Salem,

I have an iPod touch 2G with a seemingly ancient jailbreak (cydia takes 5 minutes to load…) and up until today everything was fine. My iPhone 4 is jailbroken and everything is wonderful (excluding my encounter with the infinite respring circle, close call). Now whenever I open my music app, the screen flashes and my iPod restarts. I was thinking about unjailbreaking it, because why have an iPod without music, but if you've got any ideas please let me know.

    Thanks in advance,

    Keller

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

      Keller,

The thing about jailbreaks is it isn't so much how it's done so much as how

the software runs on your device. Jailbreaking essentially lets you

read/write any file on your iPod, which you can't do out of the box. This

being said, the 5 minute load time could be because you're running old

firmware, or because your device is simply too slow to run more intensive

applications. I'd recommend restoring, upgrading to the latest firmware,

and, if you really miss your jailbreak, trying it out again.

      • Keller

        Salem,

Thanks, I'll just get rid of the jailbreak (following the steps of course) so my iPod will at least function as it's supposed to. I hardly ever use my iPod except when I workout so I don't need a jailbreak. My iPhone is jailbroken so I'm all set. Thanks for your help.

        • http://technoheads.org Salem

Yeah, iPhones tend to run faster than their iPod cousins. It's more worth

your while to have a jailbroken iPhone, especially since the 1st and 2nd gen

devices are pretty sluggish about modern apps.

  • Z18_bluelite

Thank you So Freaking MUCH! i was stuck and i so didint know what to do. Now finally its restored. Thank you so much. =]

  • Bullbridget

I CANT UNINSTALL ITUNES!! I HAVE OVER 2000 DOLLARS WORTH OF SONGS ON THERE!!! THIS DOESNT WORK AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Relax. iTunes manages your music. It’s still on your computer. What’s your issue, specifically?

  • TT

i held the lock and home bottons but after it turns off it truns back can anyone tell me how to do it right

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

just follow my instructions to the tee. There are also a few DFU timers online that you can try and follow.

  • Gagansingh4

i tried all the steps and it still didnt work

its almost dead and i tried DFU mode but it still doesnt work
    Its a Ipod 2Gen. 4.2.1. green p0ison jailbroken

            thts the main problem

          • http://technoheads.org Salem

That’s not something I can really help with. Try a different cable, a different USB port, and a different computer.

  • Dude!! thank you!!!! (((: <33

  • lyftra

Hey Salem, ive tried putting my ipod into DFU mode and restoring but it just keeps putting up the same error message, what should i do?

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

When your iPod is in “DFU Mode,” is it 1. detected by the computer, and 2. appear off? Like, is the screen literally not on?

  • Luis

Do i back up my ipod 4g that jailbroken. I really dont want to lose all my music and apps.

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Yeah, do that. I mean, your apps/music should all be on your computer anyways.

  • Lilwill2013

my ipod touch wont even turn on no matter what you do… please email me if you can help. [email protected] thanks will miller

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Haha if I email you how can anyone else benefit? Here’s what you should try: give it a charge for a while. If it won’t turn on, go through the steps to restart it (hold power and home until the screen comes on).

  • nottellinu

that sucks i did step number 4 with a jailbroken i pod greenpois0n it did NOTHING!  have to delete everything

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

haha make SURE you’re using the right jailbreak for this stuff. This was for iOS 1-3, I think. 4 and 5 have since been out, and require different jailbreaks.

  • Yoxon

THANK YOU VERY VERY VERY MUCH YOU JUST SAVED MY LIFE !!1

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

    you suck it doesn’t work

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Sorry, but I can’t help you if you don’t tell me what’s wrong.

  • Rhiannon

You sincerely kick some major ass. I am completely and totally illiterate when it comes to technology. I bought my iPod from a friend and the music was just really bad white rap so I went to restore it and it’s been broken for weeks. Thank you so much! I will definitely look for more posts by you if I have problems in the future. I especially appreciate how you spelled everything out. Some people just post things like Software ###letter##, download ##letter, ect., and I have no idea what any of that means. So thanks a lot. If you’re ever in Wisconsin, I’ll give you a job recommendation for the tech department at my work, haha.

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Haha wow, I’m really flattered. I’m glad I could help. I honestly got frustrated with all of the guides out there that breezed over some of the finer details that the average person would overlook. Don’t hesitate to contact me (technoheads.org/contact) if you ever have problems.

  • Qwerty

is it a good idea to jailbrake your ipod touch

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

I’d say you should do a little research and see if you’d actually use the features Jailbreaking offers before you go ahead and jailbreak.

  • http://technoheads.org Salem

Alright, every app has permission to run under 2 “owners:” the person who purchased the app, and Apple. Installous and/or AppSync allow you to essentially act as an app admin (i.e. Apple). By uninstalling these apps, I don’t think you have permission to edit them any more. You can’t update them regardless, as the appstore checks for updates only for the user signed in (i.e. you), and thus any app that isn’t owned by you can’t be updated like this. Installous has a feature that allows you to look for updates of your cracked apps to help fix this issue.

Now then, things you should try:
    1. Reinstall Installous and AppSync, see if that’ll let you uninstall these apps. Who knows, you might not get those API issues any more.
    2. Try removing the apps from iTunes. I can’t promise it’d work, but it’s worth the shot.

I’ll email you this time, but know that I’m not tech support, and everyone benefits from these issues as much as you do. For that reason, I like to keep the comments on the site.

  • http://technoheads.org Salem

Good find! And thank you. I’m planning a big revamp of the site, along with its styling and such, so I can really call it my own. Hopefully that’ll happen in the next few weeks.

  • Matt

omg i love U!!  ive been trying to fix my ipod for months and this worked first try

Does it usually take a long time? I left my phone on restoring over night and 6 hours later I check my phone and it was still at the same place

    • http://technoheads.org Salem

Nah, 20 minutes tops. Make sure it’s in DFU mode, though.
