Free iPod/iPhone help!

WP Greet Box icon
Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic, or get updates by email if you'd like.

I know a lot (and I mean a lot) of people have gotten iPods or iPhones for Christmas, and, given by the amount of people visiting my previous fixing iPod article yesterday, I’m assuming that there are a bunch of people that either need help setting their iPods up, have encountered some sort of error, or want to know how to do something with their iPods or iPhones. If anyone needs help jailbreaking their device, getting it set up, or anything like that, I provide free, non-professional help. As a disclaimer, I’m not responsible to anything that may happen to your device, although, seeing my track record, I can probably help you. Either post a comment or contact me, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

I did what you said but iTunes is giving me an error saying that the firmware file is not compatible
  • You need to download the VERY last firmware in the list (Its the only iPod
Touch 3G one). Did you do that?
  • dorschel
    Yes i did.
  • That is so strange. So, you:
    1. are positive you have a 3G, and not a 2G?
    2. Reinstalled iTunes?
    3. have the right version of the firmware?
    4. Tried restoring normally again (not in DFU mode)?
The next step, at least for me, would be to actually physically try another
    computer.
  • dorschel
    1.) Yes
    2.) Yes
    3.) Yes
4.) My iTouch won't show up in iTunes UNLESS its in DFU mode.
  • See, it should show up regardless: Try a new computer, or follow the link to
my other post that I mentioned before, and follow the instructions to
restart the Apple Device service (not reinstall it).
  • dorschel
Well the thing is, basically i am trying to establish whether or not this iTouch is even able to be fixed. Also, do you think its possible that Apple could detect if it was jailbroken if i take it in being i am still under warranty? I want to try all options before i take it into apple becuase i dont want warranty to be voided.
  • Right: Well, I'm not sure if they can tell or not, considering you can't
boot it correctly, but you could always take it to an Apple store or
something like that and ask the guys at the Genius bar to look at it
quickly: they fixed my Nano after I installed custom firmware on it and
completely crushed it. Granted, that was like 5 years ago, but still.

Okay so my problem is this. I used blackra1n to jailbreak my iTouch. (its a 3rd generation 8GB) However, it froze one day so i restarted it. and it went into restore mode. No big deal. This had happened before. However, when i ran blackrain to fix it, my itouch got unplugged from the computer and now everytime i turn it on it just stops at the black screen with apple logo. I can restart it, and i have it in DFU mode. My iTunes recognizes it only as an iPod though. However, I tried restoring it but i just get error 1601. saying (This iPod could not be restored). PLEASE HELP?
  • First of all, your iPod's screen is TOTALLY BLACK when you plug it in,
right? If its not, its not in DFU mode. Windows will also install a DFU
driver when you plug it in. According to apple, you need to COMPLETELY
uninstall iTunes and Apple Mobile Device support (if everything above didn't
work), and then re-install them. Don't worry; your music will still be
there. Let me know if you don't know how to re-add your music.
  • dorschel
well i dont care if i lose anything. I just want it to work again. I have it in DFU mode, but my computer doesnt say its in DFU mode. SO your saying just completely reinstall iTunes and then try to restore?
  • dorschel
and are you saying it should be in DFU mode BEFORE i plug it in? cause ive been putting it in DFU mode AFTER i plug it in. That may be my whole problem to begin with
  • Yeah, it should be plugged in and should appear in iTunes BEFORE you put it
in DFU mode. Check the second half of this page here:
    http://technoheads.org/2009/01/fixing-jailbroken-ipod-touch-problems/
  • dorschel
Well i reinstalled iTunes, got into DFU mode, and tried to restore it with the old 3.0 firmware. The screen wnet all white. and then the loading wheel showed up. But then, it restarted again and went to the apple logo screen and the error occured again. Also, when its on the apple logo screen, its glitched. There are two white lines off to the side. it hink i had it working but then something went wrong. ANy more ideas?
  • dorschel
and i cant get it to appear on iTunes UNTIL its in DFU mode.
  • Have you tried uninstalling iTunes and the Apple Device Service and
reinstalling iTunes (which will reinstall the device service as well)? And
your iPod's screen is black, correct?
  • getmoneyyea
i have a jailbroken ipod touch 2g so then i erase all settings and contents now when i turn my ipod on it just shows the apple logo then it goes away then it reappears over and over again and my ipod wont charge and itunes does not detect my device i really need help please
  • dorschel
yes i did that. then i clicked on restore. it actually got through preparing for the restore and then my iTouc went all white, then it had a progress bar for the restore but it cut off and went beack to freezing at the initial stage. btw is there any way we could set up any kind of instant messenger chat?
  • dorschel
and yeah the screen is black. right now i have it in DFU mode, and my iTunes recognizes it. but itll just fail the restore
  • if reinstalling iTunes didn't work, try restoring to a new copy of the
    firmware: Download it here:
    http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
and then hold down shift when you hit restore. it should pull up a browser
box. navigate to the file you just downloaded, select it, and restore to
that. Make ABSOLUTELY sure you select the right generation for your device,
and don't restore to iPhone firmware, obviously.
  • dorschel
ive downloaded that already. But its zipped, and when i try to restore to that folder, it doesnt let me. it doesnt have the correct filetype. how do I unzip it correctly? When i try to restore it, there are no ispw file types?
  • What generation iPod Touch do you have? 1st, 2nd, or 3rd? And again, are you
    a mac or a pc?
  • dorschel
    So what do you suggest?
  • dorschel
    3rd generation. and PC
  • If its zipped, you need to unzip it. Are you on a Mac or a PC? Without
knowing that, the most I can tell you is to just click on the .zip folder
and it should extract it for you.
  • dorschel
I'm on a PC. Do you have any Instant messenger so communication would be easier?
  • dorschel
Well i got to download correcly, i went to restore it, and it said that "this firmware is not compatible." Now what? =[
