Holy crap, I’ve done a lot of iPhone posts recently. This one, in short, is about getting Netflix on your iPhone. :D

Tutorial

If you want netflix NOW, and don’t want to wait, there’s a simple (yet tedious) process for getting the iPad app to work on your iPhone, as strange as that seems.

Download the Netflix app for iPad here. No, you don’t need an iPad to download the app. After the app has downloaded fully, right click the app and click “Show in Windows Explorer” or “Show in Finder” (Depending on your OS).

You’ll see the Netflix app in a window. Copy it to your desktop or something so it’s easier to work with. Rename it from “Netflix.ipa” to “Netflix.zip” and then extract the zip file.

Inside the extracted folder, you’ll find a folder called “Payload.” Inside THAT folder, you will find another folder called “Netflix.app.” SSH into your iPod and copy the “Netflix.app” folder to your device’s /Applications/ folder.

Now, you have to set the permissions of the folder to 755. This can be different depending on your client. Some will let you right click the folder, click “properties,” and set the permissions to 755. If you have access to a command terminal, try “chmod 755 Netflix.app” or, if that fails, “chmod 755 -r Netflix.app.”

Reboot your iPhone. All the way.

Now, you’ll need to find a 3rd party browser that will allow you to spoof the iPad’s browser (i.e. it will make websites think that you’re browsing from an iPad). There are two cheap ones; Atomic Web is just $0.99, and Perfect Browser is $1.99. They are both very good and well worth the small price tag. In either browser, you’ll need to go to Settings and select “Safari iPad” under “Identify Browser” (in Atomic Web) or “Desktop Rendering” (in Perfect Browser).

Browse to Netflix.com, login, find a movie to watch instantly, and launch it. The Netflix app will take care of the rest.

Enjoy your movie.

For those of you who have jailbroken their iPhone 4′s with the fatastic jailbreakme.com jailbreak, it is very, very easy to use FaceTime over the 3G network. That’s right; you can now make video calls to any iPhone from anywhere with 3G reception (mustn’t… bash… AT&T… coverage…).

Tutorial

It’s really easy. Just follow these few short steps.

Jailbreak your iPhone 4. It takes like 5 minutes and you don’t need a computer.

Open Cydia and install all updates. This fixes an issue with FaceTime and MMS that the jailbreak caused.

In Cydia, click on the “Manage” tab, tap “Sources,” tap “Edit,” and add the source “http://apt.modmyi.com/”

Refresh your sources, and then look for the “My3G” app. Install it.

Go through the Rock setup process, including making a username and password for yourself. Run the app, and leave all your settings at default.

Now, disconnect from any wifi networks (i.e. forget any networks nearby or turn off wifi) or go somewhere without wifi reception, and then make a FaceTime call. That’s it!

With jailbreaking officially legal by every stipulation, there’s never been a better time to give it a shot. “But what if it’s too hard?” you may ask. Well, have no fear. There’s a new jailbreak that you can do, from your iPhone. I haven’t seen a jailbreak this easy since iOS 1.1.1, which was when my iPod Touch was new. It’s THAT old. I’m not even entirely sure how it works. But hey! It works!

Tutorial

If you want to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad with 4.0 firmware on it, and get things like themes, jailbroken apps, powerful features, or other awesome jailbroken innovations, simply browse to

http://www.jailbreakme.com

-or-

http://jailbreakme.modmyi.com

on your device, and drag the nifty little “slide to jailbreak” slider. AND THAT’S IT. How crazy simple is that? I mean, I love comex for this.

Be warned, though, that the servers are under a huge load, because everyone and their cousin wants to jailbreak their iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, etc. So, if one of those links seems to be “down,” it’s probably just the server screaming in pain under the weight of everyone’s iDevices. So, be patient, retry a few times if you need.

And, if all else fails, check here for my tried-and-tested jailbroken recovery method.

Update:

Apparently, FaceTime is buggy/nonworking after jailbreaking with this method, for most people. So, if you’re on your iPhone, and use FaceTime a lot (yes, a lot is two words), I’d stay away from this jailbreak for right now, just to be safe.

Update 2 – Fix:

Alright, there’s a super simple FaceTime fix. Backup your iPhone, use Jailbreakme.com, and then restore your iPhone to that backup. This apparently fixes it. Don’t restore your iPhone to the firmware (i.e. restore to factory settings), because that defeats the purpose.

With the release of the new iPhone/iPod Touch firmware version 3.1.2, requests for a stable, working jailbreak have sprung up like wildfire all over the internet. Geohot, the brains behind PurpleRa1n, has an answer. Already. Enter Blackra1n, a quick, clean, and painless method to jailbreak (NOT UNLOCK) your iPhone or iPod Touch. The iPhone DevTeam promises to have a version of QuickPwn running as soon as possible, but has been unable to produce anything yet. Here’s a quick little tutorial on how to get your device jailbroken and working as soon as possible. Have any issues? Post a comment!

Warning! Read carefully to avoid bricking your device!
If you have an iPhone 3G or 3GS, and currently unlock your device, do NOT upgrade to 3.1, 3.1.1 or 3.1.2 as it will remove your baseband unlock! Basebands can NOT be downgraded. Additionally, this jailbreak is tethered for the “3G” (new) iPod touches (size 32GB and 64GB). There is no jailbreak for the 8GB iPod Touch 3G.

The kid looks like Frodo, doesn't he?

Tutorial, in plain and simple English.

1. Make sure you are on an OFFICIAL Apple stock 3.1, 3.1.1 or 3.1.2 firmware. (Get it here)

2. Get BlackRa1n by going to BlackRa1n.com and clicking the windows logo at the bottom. (Or click here) 2. Plug your iPod Touch or iPhone into your computer.

3. Start iTunes, and make sure your device is detected. If you don’t have the latest version of iTunes, get it here. (I got it working on version 9.0.1)

4. Run BlackRa1n (blackra1n.exe), and click “Make It Ra1n.”

5. You will see an “Entering Recovery” message, and your iPod/iPhone will display the BlackRa1n logo. Wait a few minutes; your device will reboot automatically.

6. On your device, run the “blackra1n” app and choose either Cydia ,Icy, or Rock(I personally just use Cydia; its more stable, and you can install the other two through it. And no, I’ve never tried “Rock”).

7. Kick back, relax, and watch the fireworks.

Read more on BlackRa1n here

Everyone knows that iPhones and iPod Touches are NOTHING like their predecessors when it comes to restoring your music library after some catistrophic computer mishap or hard drive failure. It happens a lot, and I’m probably one of the biggest culprits. A while back, I found all my songs on my iPod Nano, imported them into iTunes without copying them onto my computer, and then told iTunes to wipe my iPod. Within seconds, all my music (yeah, at the time it was only 8 gigs, but still) was gone. Needless to say, I wasn’t very pleased. I figured that the easiest way to help people out with it is to write up a little tutorial. Below, you’ll find tutorials for PC as well as Mac users, and all the download links you need.

“I’m a PC.”

Well, isn’t that nice for you then. The PC tutorial is markedly easier, and involves just one piece of software that many people already have: WinAmp. WinAmp is an iTunes replacement, and can be tweaked to do anything from DJ’ing to internet radio broadcasting. However, we are going to install a plugin that allows it to interface with an iPod Touch or iPhone, and back up its music. Alright; lets get started.

Download everything!
You’ll need to download Winamp, and the ml_iPod plugin for Winamp. Make sure you get version 3.08 or later of ml_iPod or it won’t support iPhone/iPod Touch devices. You do not need to download the “Pro” version of Winamp, and you can choose whether or not you want to download it with the free bundled .mp3. Install Winamp first by running the file you downloaded, follow all the steps, and enable any features you’d like. Then, run the ml_iPod plugin installer, follow all the steps, restart Winamp if its running, and get ready to rock and roll.

Getting started.
If you haven’t already, plug your iPod Touch/iPhone into your computer, run iTunes, but DO NOT SYNC IT or you will lose all of your music. Connecting it is crucial in initializing the device communication drivers. Next, you’ll want to close iTunes completely and open up WinAmp. If all goes well, you should notice your iPod Touch/iPhone on the left hand side menu. If not, try unplugging your device, waiting a minute or so, and plugging it back in. Still no luck? Restart your computer and re-launch Winamp, then try again. If you’re still getting nothing, you may have installed something wrong, old, or corrupted, and I recommend you uninstal everything and start from step one again, or contact me.

Prepping your device.
The best way to guarantee a clean backup is to make sure your device has a clean, correct database. This means that the file used to organize, list, and pull up songs is clean. Luckily, the ml_iPod plugin has a feature to clean up your database for you. Right click your iPod Touch/iPhone, select “iPod Tools” and choose Cleanup part 1. If you want to ensure your device is fully cleaned up, I’d run parts 2 and 3 afterwards. This may take some time, but it is well worth it. Cleanup part 1 removes any “orphaned” or unused database entries. Part 2 checks every file for consistency, and part 3 checks for any songs that it could not find.

Backup Time!
Here’s where things get hairy, at least for me. Go to start, click “My Computer,” and select your primary hard drive (usually “C:”). An issue I noticed with ml_iPod is that when it backs songs up to your computer, it copies them to the root folder of your primary hard drive, and for this reason, I IMPLORE that you make note of any and all files and folders in the root of your hard drive (anything in the folder “C:/). After you’ve done this, its time for some backing up. Go back into Winamp, clicking your device, and selecting any songs you want on your computer. Right click your selection, and select “Copy songs to hard drive.” You may have to wait a little bit as it copies, but once it finishes, you should have all of your songs back on your hard drive! Just move them to a place where you’ll be able to find them later, unplug your iPod, and go on your own merry way.

“I’m a mac.”

I’m still working on a tutorial for Mac users; the only method I’ve been able to come up with so far involves using a free trial, and I’m not a fan of 30 day trials. I should have a Mac tutorial up within a few days. Hang tight, and contact me with any immediate questions.

In a matter of days after Beejive’s revolutionary anti-piracy measures took place, there have been at least 2 ways to bypass the copy protection that Beejive diligently put up. Here’s how the protection works, first of all:

Cracked iPod apps have one flaw: they lack a ‘.plist’ file. Beejive simply checks for this, and if it can’t find one, it blocks the use of the app and sends your device ID to a server somewhere, where it is blacklisted (in otherwords, even if you DID pay for it, you couldn’t use it unless you personally sent an email to beejive). This being said, someone from Xsellize.com found a way to fix it: by putting a .plist file where its needed. Of course, there are also innumerable modified applications that bypass the pirating protection floating around the internet. Either way, you’ll need a jailbroken iPod Touch. Read more for details on how to ‘fix’ Beejive. Please note that these guides are only to help those people allegedly locked out of beejive by the recent update. If you’re running an illegal copy of the application, you have probably been blacklisted already, so I’d just purchase a legitimate copy if I were you.

If you haven’t been blacklisted, and still have issues, scroll down all the way to see the latest fixes.

This is the guide I found on Xsellize.com. Try it at your own risk: I haven’t touched it yet.

Here’s a detailed (and the 15th time) directions:
1. Hold onto the BeejiveIM icon and click on the X to delete the file.
2. Find any BeejiveIM app you want. 2.1.019, 2.1.0, 2.0.1, etc using Installous, Appulous, etc.
3. Let it install on the phone, and do not open the application yet. Turn wifi on and SSH into your phone with the IP address and root/alpine login. Go up a folder, then go to /mobile/Applications. You would have to select each folder until you find a folder that contains iTunesMetadata.plist. Drag that onto your computer.
4. You would have to select each folder until you find the BeejiveIM folder, but I found someone to sort the folders to “Changed” which I do not know yet. Find the folder, and drag the iTunesMetadata.plist onto the folder (the folder should contain Documents, Preferences, tmp, and iTunesArtwork, just drag the plist on there, not the Documents folder, not the tmp folder, not the Preferences folder)
5. Open Beejive and tell me what you get.

If a no.paid.license.found, that might mean you are blacklisted and there’s nothing you can do unless you can spoof your ID.
“Today the team has made it known that he had introduced a blacklist that marks all IDs of devices that have received the application for alternative ways, and all these people will not use the application, even after regularly purchased in AppStore!”
(Translated from Italian with Google Translate, http://nickioc.blogspot.com/)

For people that it did work for (like me :D) We were probably lucky that Beejive didn’t blacklist us for opening the app for the first time, or we quit as soon as that Youtube video popped up.

Hmmm… a Youtube video…. YouTube – BeejiveIM Possible Fix

Ok. Now that that’s been said, I still have NO idea if it works, nor am I responsible for any damage it may cause. Could someone let me know if it works?

If you have been wrongfully blacklisted, and can’t find your receipt…

You can try looking for it around the internet. This link got rather good ratings, so it seems trustworthy. Once again, I wouldn’t know if it works or not, nor do I hold responsibility for it. Here’s the download’s description:

This is the cracked version of Beejive IM v2.1.0 for iPhone and iPod Touch. In this version there is supposed to be an anti-piracy block that doesn’t let you use it if you are using a jailbroken device, BUT THERE IS A PATCH SO YOU WON’T GET IT. HOW TO INSTALL: You must have a jailbroken device (the iPod touch 2g is jailbreakable now) You must have the newest firmware You must have the MobileInstallation file patched To get MobileInstallation patch: 1. Open Cydia. 2. Add cydia.hackulo.us as a source. 3. Search MobileInstallion and download it. After you have done that…import this file into iTunes and sync it.

Sadly, Beejive’s efforts were once again thwarted. However, their efforts may usher in a new wave of anti-piracy efforts.

Edit:

For those of you who’ve had some troubles…

There have been many successful commenters, but there have been equally many unsuccessful ones. Grr. So, naturally, I want to fix this. Try this out. This is just some IDEAS of mine… I have no idea if they work.

Upgrade to the latest, jailbroken firmware (2.2.1)

Completely remove beejive.

Restart your iPod Touch/iPhone.

Reinstall by whichever method you want.

Tell me if it works or not. I’ll be watching you. No, really. Do it.

Something else someone mentioned…

The latest version of beejive depends on 2.2.1 to some extent, although its been said that it will work on earlier firmwares. Maybe updating will do something to help. I’m still digging around for answers and better fixes… keep checking this post.

Ok, tell me how this goes. On a side note, this article is getting me 250 hits a day, which is FAR more than any of my other articles have ever gotten me. Thanks a ton, everyone.

Latest fix, as of April 4th, 2009.

Apparently, this method works. This has been confirmed by a few users, so lets hope this works out.

Make a new iTunes account (buy yourself a $0.01 gift card or something) and sync your iPod with this account. After this, try one of the methods above. I recommend the .ipa one, personally. Make sure that if you use the .plist method, you do NOT run Beejive until you’ve updated the .plist file in beejive’s application directory. Making a new account apparently gives you a “second chance” with a new license. The only issue you might find is if you have legitimately purchased apps. You’ll have to either re-purchase them or find .ipa’s for them.

Latest fix, as of May 29, 2009

Gotta say, tons of thanks to David for his comment. It should really help anyone with issues a lot. Let me know if it works.

Wow. awesome guide. thats for all the information

ive got my Beejive working again after using that torrent that you kindly provided. before that i checked Beejive IM didnt have any undeleted old files in my “/private/var/mobile/Applications” directory by first installing ANY version of the application then uninstalling it again.

after which i SSH’d into my ipod and arranged the folders by date so i could easily check that it wasnt present in that directory.

after which i simply downloaded that torrent, (which is completely legit) and synced the ipa over to my ipod. Simple!

Thanks for all the help

As promised, I said I’d turn my old youtube video into a (much) updated tutorial.
All I’m going to do is teach you how to control your computer with your iPod Touch or iPhone. All this means is that you can see your computer screen on your iPod, and you can click/type/etc. just as you would normally, except on your iPod Touch.

Its also nice for fooling your friends into thinking you have Windows XP on your iPod Touch.

Ok. To start, you will need 3 things:

Client software (i.e. what lets you VIEW other computers) for your iPod Touch.

Server software (i.e. what clients connect to) for your computer.

Internet connection for both your iPod Touch AND your computer

Access to the router that your computer is hooked up to (assuming that you are not using dial-up or are only using a modem).

About an hour of free time.

Step 1

First off, you need a client application for the iPod Touch. There are several clients for all different versions of the iPhone/iPod Touch. For my sake, I’m just going to refer to the iPhone/iPod Touch as just ‘iPod,’ because I’ll go crazy otherwise. If your iPod is running normal firmware, you must have at least firmware version 2.0 installed (which means you have the App Store on your iPod Touch). If it is running something older than 2.0, you can either upgrade to 2.0 or jailbreak your iPod. Click here to find out more about jailbreaking.

The versions I have seen are as follows:

VNsea (based off of Chicken of the VNC

Mocha VNC Lite (Free)

Mocha VNC ($5.99 USD)

Pick one and install it. Did you do that? Good. On to step 2.

Step 2

Now that your iPod has the means of reading VNC streams (i.e. the flow of data that includes what is displayed on your computer’s screen), you need to set up your desktop to send a stream of its own out. To do this, you need some sort of VNC server software. My personal favorite is UltraVNC, which can be downloaded here. Make sure you download the right version. Remember that the later the version, the better (so long as it is stable). If there is a beta version of UltraVNC, by all means go for it. Just know that it might not work as well as you want it too.

Ok. Now, install it. Right now. Seriously, stop what you’re doing and install it. Did you do it? Good.

Step 3

Before I say anything, I’m just going to tell you to go to Portforward.com, find your router, and find instructions on how to forward port 5900. Oh, and then follow these instructions.

Now, its time to make sure that the correct ports on your router are open. A port is a single hole in the thousands of connections connecting you to the fantastic world of the internet. I really don’t want to go into detail in how to do this, seeing as there are billions of routers with billions of different ways for doing this. On a PC, hold down windows and hit R, type ‘cmd’ in the box that pops up, and hit enter. In the command prompt, type in ‘ipconfig,’ and hit enter. Then, look for ‘Default Gateway.’ Type this number, as it appears, right into an internet browser window. You may be asked to log into your router’s admin page. You’ll have to find out your router’s default username and password (unless you’ve set one yourself). Its usually “Admin” for both the username and password, but it may not be. Once you’ve logged in, look for a section that says “Port Forwarding” or “Applications and Gaming.” You’re going to want to follow the instructions and forward port 5900 for both TCP and IP connections. It may sound confusing, but Portforward clarifies everything really nicely. Look there if you aren’t well phrased in messing with your router.

Step 4

Ok. Lets get cracking. Go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ and find your IP. Write this down somewhere. Its important. Next, you’ll want to run your VNC server on your computer. Start the program up, and make sure your server software is actually running the server. Simply starting it may not start the server. Make sure to set a username and password for yourself before you start, or anyone can access your computer, which is not good. Ok. Fire up the software on your iPod Touch, and add a new server. Under IP, type in the IP address you wrote down earlier. Also, enter a username and password, if you made one (which you should have). Hit connect, and… Ta dah! Your computer is now fully controllable from your iPod Touch, from anywhere that has internet! Don’t you just love computers?

If you are one of the many people with a second generation iPod Touch, waiting long and patiently for an iPod Touch 2G jailbreak, fear no more. There is a jailbreak open to the public, and it does not involve plugging it into your computer every time you start it up (in otherwords, there is an ‘untethered’ jailbreak out).

Read more to see my guide on how to jailbreak your iPod. Like anything, I wouldn’t recommend that you jailbreak your iPod Touch unless you really know what you’re doing. If you want to see a full length, detailed guide, try iPodTouchFans.com. Thats where I go, so what do you have to lose? As I only own a first generation iPod Touch, I can’t answer all your questions, and would request that you go to this website with any specific questions. Of course, I’ll answer anything posted here to the best of my ability. Regardless, I can’t wait to see all the cool developments that will come about thanks to this update.

Awright, here it goes.

Step 1: Getting stuff.

Download and extract “unofficialsn0w 2.0″ for windows here.

Download the iPod Touch 2.2.1 firmware here, and rename it to “OriginalFW.ipsw”.
Move this file into the “IPSW” folder that you extracted from the “unnoficialsn0w” download.

Step 2: Running stuff.

Run “IPSW.bat,” found in the unnoficialsn0w” extract. If you’re in Windows Vistas, make sure you run it as an administrator (right click the file and select “Run as Administrator”). You will probably see a command prompt window pop up and start doing things. It’ll take a bit: Don’t do anything to it. Just let it run. Did you do that? Good. Now, look in the IPSW folder (the folder you put “OriginalFW.ipsw” in), and you’ll find a “jb.ipsw” file. That, obviously, is you’re jailbroken firmware. But you’re not done yet. Make sure you have 7Zip or WinRAR before you go on to step 3.

Step 3: Fixing stuff.

Now for the fun part. We need to replace a file from the jailbroken firmware. Look in your IPSW folder. See that file named “LLB.n72ap.RELEASE.img3″? We need to replace a file in the jailbroken iPod firmware with this one. Right click the “jb.ipsw” file, and open it with either 7Zip or WinRAR (I told you you’d need them). You need to navigate to “Firmware\all_flash\all_flash.n72ap.production\”, delete the old file, and move the new one in its place.

Step 4: Jailbreaking Stuff.

Ok: the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Plug in your iPod and put it in DFU mode. If you don’t know what that is, read the second part of my “Fixing Jailbroken iPod Touch Problems” article. Go back to the “unofficialsn0w” folder and run “RUNME.exe”. Now, if its not already open, open iTunes, go to your iPod Touch screen (you should get a message saying that your iPod needs to be restored before you can use it), hold down shift, and click “Restore.” You’ll see a box asking what firmware you want to restore from. Navigate to your “jb.ipsw” firmware, select it, and restore. Ta dah! Your 2G iPod Touch should be jailbroken.

Once again, I can’t enforce how important it is that you know what you’re doing, to some extent, before you jailbreak your iPod. I, nor will anyone else, cannot claim responsability for anything you may do to your iPod, good or bad. If you think of something I missed, or something I need to change, email me or comment, and I’ll make sure to fix/add/change it.
